New Zealand 19 October: Invercargill
Today we were based in Invercargill, one of the world's southern most cities.
Our first school was Ascot Community School.
We gave them a Peace Tree for their garden.
All the children had a chance to hold the torch.
The highlight of today was meeting with Invercargill’s illustrious mayor, Tim Shadbolt. He greeted us in his mayoral finery.
We had many pictures and he led us up to the council chambers. The team was charmed by him. Tonight we are watching The World’s Fastest Indian, in which he features, in his honour.
Then we took a detour to visit Bluff, the southern most point of the South Island, which today in particular felt very close to Antarctica!
Our next school was Invercargill Middle School.
We received a warm welcome.
We sang the World Harmony Run theme song, and one of the children reciprocated with his own song.
We played a game where the children had to guess the languages of our international team. When Becky spoke Welsh one little boy guessed she was from Stewart Island! They were very sweet.
Distance: 22 km
