Luxembourg 6 May: German Borders - Luxembourg City
This morning, accompanied by a nice shower, we visited the municipality where the Mayor still wanted to meet us after we met him yesterday at a typical German festival. He gave us hats from the national cycling team, practical cotton bags, and a very useful umbrella, all from Gerolstein.
20 km further we arrived at Salm. It was raining cats and dogs and there where 10 rather soggy looking children waiting for us. They soon warmed up during the 2km downhill to Wallenborn. Two little boys were rather reluctant to run, but as soon as Elizabeth gave them the torch to run with, they were flying.
We arrived at Wallenborn, famous for it’s natural geyser, where it seemed like the whole village was out to greet us in the pouring rain.
The Mayor and townspeople gave us a warm welcome and a delicious buffet from the trunk of the car! Then we watched the geyser as it gushed forth like a fountain (more water…).
We went on to run an enjoyable 22km to Bitburg, known internationally for its beer and cultural festival.
We then approached Echternach, the border town between Germany and Luxembourg.
We ran over the border bridge with local children towards the square where the Mayor received us.
With a police escort we ran to Consdorf through the lush green forests and fields of Luxembourg.
It’s such a beautiful country. The Mayor of Consdorf expressed himself at a bomb-monument, saying that the hope and harmony that we are spreading with the run will contribute to the discouragement of the production of these arms.
We then set off for a very important event. Still with police escorting us until the centre of Luxembourg City...
We headed towards the office of the Prime Minister of Luxembourg who now presides over the European Council, Mr. Jean-Claude Juncker.
He received the World Harmony Run Torch, and our runners, from different European countries, introduced themselves. Our common goal, to unite Europe, is the same, although we have different ways to strive for that goal.
He gave us this message to take with us on our way:
“Your message is essential. I hope it will be understood- everywhere.”
Prime Minister, Luxembourg 6 May
