This morning the World Harmony Run began its 49 nation - 24,000 km odyssey across Europe. The opening ceremony took place at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations headquarters in Rome. Upon arriving at the FAO, I enjoyed observing the excitement and anticipation in our team members; since many of the runners have participated in this event before, we know the richness of the experience and the abiding sense of fulfillment that invariably becomes part of the daily World Harmony Run experience - and we have about 7 glorious months to look forward to as we begin this, the European leg of the 2008 World Harmony Run!!!

Questa mattina la World Harmony Run ha iniziato il viaggio che la portera attraverso 49 Nazioni europee per un totale di 24.000 km.

La Cerimonia di Apertura si è tenuta presso la sede centrale della FAO, l’Organizzazione delle Nazioni Unite per l’Alimentazione e l’Agricoltura con base a Roma. Al mio arrivo alla FAO, ho osservato con piacere il senso di anticipazione e l’entusiasmo dei corridori del nostro team. In molti abbiamo già partecipato a delle tappe nelle passate edizioni della corsa e conoscendo la ricchezza di questa esperienza ed il durevole senso di pienezza che invariabilmente diviene parte dell’esperienza giornaliera della World Harmony Run, guardiamo con anticipazione ai sei mesi che ci aspettano mentre ci apprestiamo a cominciare il “ramo Europeo” della World Harmony Run!!!

After some introductions to the very helpful and eager FAO staff, I was invited into the VIP reception room to await the arrival of the other VIPs. I was particularly thrilled to find myself seated across the room from Tegla Loroupe, one of the world's fastest women marathon runners and Gina Lollobrigida, one of Italy’s most famous actresses.

Dopo esser stato presentato ai disponibili ed entusiasti membri dello staff FAO, sono stato invitato nella sala vip della FAO per aspettare l’arrivo degli altri ospiti d’onore. Ero soprattutto elettrizzato di trovarmi nella stessa stanza con Tegla Loroupe, una delle più veloci maratonete del mondo e con Gina Lollobrigida, una delle più famose attrici italiane.

After all the VIPs had gathered, we headed out to officially light the torch and get on our way. Mr. James Butler, Deputy Director General of the FAO spoke very graciously, congratulating us on our efforts and thanking the Run’s founder, Sri Chinmoy for initiating the Run. I responded, thanking the FAO for all its support and assistance in bringing this event to fruition.

Dopo che tutti gli ospiti d’onore si sono riuniti, il Dott. Butler, Direttore Generale Aggiunto della FAO, ha iniziato la Cerimonia ufficiale congratulandosi con noi per il nostro impegno e ringraziando il fondatore della Corsa, Sri Chinmoy, di recente scomparso. Ho risposto ringraziando a mia volta la FAO per il suo supporto ed assistenza nel portare a fruizione l’evento.

Next to offer her thoughts was FAO “Goodwill Ambassador” Gina Lollobrigida, who has devoted countless hours to humanitarian activities and was one of the first four FAO “Goodwill Ambassadors”, appointed in 1999. Tegla Loroupe, who serves as “UN Ambassador for Sport”, shared a most heartfelt speech highlighting the importance of world harmony, especially for children.

Successivamente ha parlato Gina Lollobrigida, “Ambasciatrice di Buona Volontà” della FAO, che si dedica instancabilmente a numerose attività umanitarie ed è stata uno dei primi quattro “Ambasciatori di Buona Volontà” della FAO. Infine Tegla Loroupe, “Ambasciatrice delle Nazioni Unite per lo Sport”, ha tenuto un discorso molto sentito, sottolineando l’importanza dell’armonia nel mondo, specialmente per i bambini.

Then, Mr. Butler symbolically lit the World Harmony Run Torch and passed it to me and the other dignitaries. Finally, European Deputy On. Gianni Rivera, a long-time friend of the World Harmony Run and former soccer champion, took the Torch and passed it to a couple of children, one from Senegal and the other from Italy, who officially started the relay heading out towards the Coliseum, followed by a large group of primary school children and runners.

Il Dott. Butler ha quindi acceso simbolicamente la Fiaccola della World Harmony Run, passandola poi tra tutti i Dignitari presenti. Infine, la Fiaccola è stata ricevuta dall’On. Gianni Rivera, Parlamentare Europero e grande calciatore del passato, da anni amico e sostenitore della nostra iniziativa, che l’ha a sua volta passata una bambina Senegalese e a uno Italiano, che hanno iniziato ufficialmente la staffetta partendo insieme alla volta del Colosseo, seguiti da un folto gruppo composto da corridori e da bambini delle scuole elementari.

At the Coliseum we met other school children to form the “living” word “harmony”. Tegla made sure that everyone of them could hold the Torch!

Al Colosseo abbiamo trovato ad attenderci altri bambini delle scuole per formare tutti insieme la parola “vivente” armonia, “harmony”. Nella foto potete vedere Tegla passare con la Fiaccola tra i bimbi per assicurarsi che tutti tengano la Fiaccola in mano!!

Then, we all joined together in a large group - at this point we were about 500 people - to run along the famous “via dei Fori Imperiali” street escorted by very nice and helpful police officers until “piazza del Campidoglio”, a beautiful renaissance square designed by Michelangelo, in front of Rome City Hall. There we were received by Mr. Mario Morcone, the City Commissioner (Mayor).

Subito dopo, ci siamo raggruppati nuovamente, a questo punto eravamo circa cinquecento persone, per correre insieme scortati da dei gentilissimi poliziotti, lungo la famosa “Via dei Fori Imperiali” fino in “Piazza del Campidoglio”, una bellissima piazza rinascimentale progettata da Michelangelo, dove si trova il palazzo comunale. Qui siamo stati accolti dal Dott. Mario Morcone, Commissario Straordinario di Roma.

The Ceremony in “Piazza del Campidoglio” was joyful and solemn, with group pictures, speeches by Mr. Morcone, Tegla Loroupe and Mr. Domenico Gargano, the Director of the FAO athletic Club, and with the runners of our international team singing the World Harmony Run Hymn and introducing themselves to the people gathered there. Mr. Morcone lit a brazier in front of the City Hall formally starting the European Route of the World Harmony Run and carried the Torch for the first steps, passing it to Tegla.

La Cerimonia in piazza del Campidoglio è stata allo stesso tempo gioiosa e solenne, con foto di gruppo, discorsi tenuti dal Commissario Morcone, da Tegla Loroupe e dal Dott. Domenico Gargano, direttore del “FAO Athletic Club”. Il Commissario Morcone ha acceso con la Fiaccola un Braciere davanti al Campidoglio, avviando formalmente il percorso europeo della World Harmony Run, e portando poi la Fiacola per i primi metri prima di passarla a Tegla, che è stata di fatto la nostra prima staffettista “ufficiale”! Durante l’accensione del braciere, i corridori del nostro team internazionale hanno cantato l’inno della Corsa e prima di partire si sono presentati ai bambini e agli adulti in piazza.

We descended to street level (the “Campidoglio” square is on top of one of the original 7 hills of Rome!!) and followed our police escort through “Via del Corso” and the narrow streets of Rome creating quite a stir amongst the tourists and Romans alike.

Siamo così scesi dal Colle del Campidoglio (uno degli originali 7 di Roma antica!) e seguito la nostra scorta di poliziotti in moto attraverso Via Del Corso e le strette strade di Roma tra i saluti e l’entusiasmo dei passanti.

This was a most significant launch to the European World Harmony Run and we extend our thanks to the FAO, the City of Rome and to all the organizations and individuals who worked so hard to bring this event to life.

Soon we found ourselves trotting along the narrow country roads, entering a small village called Narni. One middle-aged Italian gentleman met us on the outskirts of the village, to escort us into town. It seemed most of the village had turned out to meet us, all wearing bright orange baseball caps.

Presto ci siamo trovati a correre lungo le strade della campagna romana, giungendo a Narni. Un signore di mezza età ci ha accolti all’ingresso della cittadina per scortarci nell’abitato; sembrava che la maggior parte degli abitanti fosse uscita ad incontrarci! Molti indossavano cappellini di un vivace arancione.

After spending some time meeting the locals and singing songs to each other, we headed off to Terni. Having only run about 2.5 km for the day, I thought I might get a few more miles in by the day's end. So I found myself in a group of about 20 or so runners jogging towards Terni - the local Terni running club was very kindly escorting us into town.

Dopo l’incontro, per il quale erano stati preparati canti di benvenuto, ci siamo diretti verso Terni. Avendo corso solo per un paio di km, ho pensato di poter correre ancora un po’ prima della fine della giornata, così mi sono trovato, diretto verso Terni, in un gruppo di circa venti corridori del club podistico locale, che ci hanno gentilmente accompagnati in città.

By this time it was getting dark and the rain was starting to come down. Police escorted us into the town square where we were unexpectedly greeted by the “La Rukkia” Folk Grupa. This crew of enthusiastic folk dancers was doing a jig in the local piazza, brandishing a collection of percussion instruments that looked like those you might have seen if your name was Alice and you were in a place called Wonderland.

Stava ormai scendendo la sera ed iniziando a piovere. La polizia ci ha scortato nella piazza centrale dove siamo stati inaspettatamente accolti dal gruppo folk “La Racchia”. Questo gruppo di entusiasti musicisti e ballerini folk stavano ballando una “Giga”, accompagnandosi con una collezione di strumenti a percussione quali avresti potuto vedere se tu fossi stato “Alice” e ti fossi trovato “nel Paese delle meraviglie”.

There were giant scissors with cymbals, wooden hammers to clack with and wooden children who, when whacked together, made a satisfying clack. All this was accompaniment to the main melody, provided by a portable sound system complete with a generator imaginatively wrapped in fabric and metal framework to resemble a steam train.

C’erano enormi forbici come cimbali, martelli di legno che, percossi, facevano un forte rumore. Tutto questo era accompagnava la melodia principale, fornita da un impianto audio portatile con l’amplificatore, il tutto fantasiosamente assemblato in una struttura di metallo e tessuto in modo tale da somigliare ad un treno a vapore. Dopo alcuni crescenti giri di danze e musiche folk, ci siamo presentati a questi sorridenti menestrelli, per nulla intimoriti dalla crescente pioggia e decrescente temperatura.

After a few rousing rounds of folk tunes, we introduced ourselves to these smiling minstrels who were not deterred in the slightest by the increasing rain and decreasing temperature. With the formalities completed, the band started up once again and I found myself clacking away on the giant scissor / cymbals, marching along in a congo line of Italian folk musicians. It turned out we were heading undercover to enjoy a few more selections from the steam engine’s repertoire before heading to our accommodation for a quick shower, followed by a delicious Italian meal with the running club and folk group.

Terminate le formalità, la Banda ha iniziato nuovamente a suonare e mi sono ritrovato coinvolto nel mezzo dell’allegria del gruppo. Alla fine ci siamo trovati ad ascoltare ancora vari pezzi del repertorio del loro “treno a vapore”, prima di dirigerci ai nostri alloggi per una veloce doccia, prima d’incontrare nuovamente i corridori del Club locale e i musicisti del gruppo folk per una deliziosa cena italiana.

Sleepy but satisfied, we retired for the evening - Day 1 of our 7-month journey through Europe had come to a close and we have many, many, many more, wonderful days to look forward to as we take our message through the great continent of Europe.

Assonnati ma soddisfatti, ci siamo ritirati per la notte: il primo giorno si era concluso.
