England 29 March: Kendal - Manchester

Kendal - Preston - Chorley - Manchester

The first leg of Tuesday's run was a beautiful stretch over rolling narrow country lanes with great views and sunshine to boot. Abichal found the locals very friendly and receptive in this section, stopping to chat with old and young alike. We even got free coffee from a sympathetic vendor.

On the A6 between Lancaster and Preston we bumped into the Radio Lancashire mobile recording unit who were excited to meet us, and recorded an interview. See article

Then several hours dogged running through Preston, and on into the large urban sprawl of Greater Manchester, taking in Chorley, Salford and eventually the city of Manchester itself. This was broken up by another luxurious car park lunch - by a different supermarket this time. Today's section ended with us running into Manchester itself with Artur (Berlin) excitedly raising the torch to bemused onlookers and motorists.

We checked into Manchester Youth Hostel, situated in an oasis of calm by the canal basin. For the evening meal we walked through the bustling streets (an impressive mixture of fascinating industrial heritage and unexpected affluence and redevelopment) to a fine vegetarian restaurant discovered by Balavan. (Actually he pretty much lived there during his entire time in Manchester!)

Distance: 125km
