Ethiopia 23 November: Addis Ababa

It has become the tradition for our WHR Team to participate in the Great Ethiopian Run.

Many of the world-class athletes we meet here support the WHR, so it is a little bit like a family gathering...

The Great Ethiopian Run and Haile Gebreselassie have to be mentioned in one sentence, as they are one and the same!

Haile is the main organiser and he made the Great Ethiopian Run the largest road race in Africa!

Over the last years it has become a high profile race and also gives the opportunity for young aspiring athletes to get international attention.

Our friends from the Ethiopian Athletics Federation...

Caroline Kluft has come to Addis Ababa twice to support this Race!

The athletes have to concentrate properly before the start...

Ten minutes ahead of the main field, the top  female athletes took off...

Our team lined up for the start, ready to run!

A line of soldiers and helpers tried to keep the crowd under control...

32,000 runners ready to go for 10 km!

And start! We had to run for our lives, as the masses threathened us to overrun us from behind!

A red sea of runners empties itself into the streets of Addis Ababa!

The female winner!...

...and the winner of the men's race!

Everybody is a winner! Addis Ababa is located 2,400m above sea level, which makes it an especially difficult race for everybody who is not used to the high altitude!

Haile Gebrselassie shakes hands with finishers...

Our team on its last few metres....

Happy finishers and shining faces...

Haile with our WHR Team at the finish line...

The winners of the men's race...

Caroline Kluft takes the torch...
