Cyprus 12 May: Nicosia - Limassol

First thing in the morning we went to the International school of Nicosia. All the kids sat down around us in the school yard and we made a little program with them.

They were only between four and twelve years old but they asked such bright questions! We also played the language game.

There were kids from countries all around the world in this school so they had very little trouble in guessing from which country we were.

All of us fell absolutely in love with the children, they were so sweet and well-behaved. They were full of enthusiasm, especially when we started running around the school yard.

The kids were running around for a long time with the torch and the flags. Nevertheless, we did find time to watch the World Harmony Run DVD with the older children and then left for the Holiday Inn Hotel for the start of today's run.

At the hotel we again met with Mrs. Tserioti, the Deputy Mayor of Nicosia, and made some nice group pictures. Holding the torch she said a few nice words before we started off.

Three children of the international Highgate School and a teacher spontaneously joined us. Jo, Sam and Paul ran with us for almost three kilometers, proudly holding the flags and the torch. They were quite fast too! even though their speed was slightly hampered by the World Harmony Run shirts that they got from us and were way too big for them.

Jo is actually the tennis champion of Cyprus in her age category. Leonidas, the police officer, also ran with us. He became our good friend from the moment we met him. He helped us a lot in communicating with the police cars and planning the route. All the members of the team eagerly took their turn at running along with him, while speaking about Cyprus and running training. He will come to Berlin in September to run the Berlin Marathon.

In the burning sun we advanced slowly towards Limassol. Everyone was running many kilometers. Leonidas had run 42 kilometers by the end of the day! During the last stretch, along the famous beach promenade, we were joined by Andreas, a running friend of Leonidas.

Andreas will soon turn seventy and ran with us for 15 kilometers! Tatiana and Runar both covered 26 kilometers and Frank, Martin and Mark all did approximately a half marathon. Just before Limassol we had a swim in the Mediterranean Sea. It felt like heaven after more than 20 kilometers of running. We finished at the old port of Limassol after running 85 kilometers all together. What a great day! We all felt that Cyprus really opened its heart for us this day. We got such a nice energy from all the people that we met. We really hope that next year we will be able to run a few days more here in Cyprus.

Distance: 85km
