Croatia 9 May: Sibenik - Split

The mayor of Sibenik made our morning start a beautiful and joyful experience by meeting us in her office and delivering a wonderful speech. Her words, full of enthusiasm and understanding for our cause, have touched our hearts and gave us courage for today's run to Split.

Her kind and uplifting words we needed after the departure of our great runner and team-member, Abhinabha, who left to go home to organize the World Harmony Run's finale in Amsterdam. The mayor was beaming with joy after we sang our song and she wanted to run with us immediately, although she had another meeting right away.

On our way out of Sibenik, we visited the sports kindergarden Zuzula. Children learn to play handball and basketball here. Then we went all the way down to Trogir.

A great reception was held on the picturesque main square, where we were greeted by the mayor of this beautiful city. As a part of the programme we saw a medieval dance, singing and mazuretkinje girls' stick dance.

In Kastel Luksic we met a legend of the world´s long distance swimming, Croatian swimmer Veljko Rogosic. He recieved us at his house and shared with us his experiences from accomplishing his last Guinness world record, 255 km swimming without any special equipment and without getting out of the water. We actually came on a day that he recieved an official note confirming his record.

He showed us through his medals and diplomas and presented a signed book to everyone.

After that we ran to an elementary school in Kastel Securac in which our Croatian runner Anna studied. Now she was like a hero! She was a shining example to all the kids and a great joy to the teachers.

The mayor of Kastela came along to this school and ran with the torch in a big crowd of children at the school grounds. Afterwards, the torch passed from hand to hand as we watched a wonderful programme prepared by the pupils.

We spent a little more time here than the schedule allowed, so we had to send a fast runner. Petr wanted to run, so we let him loose.

These were the fastest 5 km of the day, thanks to a policeman who accompanied Petr. The policeman was driving his motorbike quite fast, making his way through the busy traffic of Split evening. Petr found himself running some 15 meters behind the police escort, which meant he had to maintain a pretty fast pace. He showed up by the last school miraculously fast!

The programme at the last school of the day, Pujanke school, was fantastic. Wonderful dancing, songs composed by one of the teachers, all about friendship, good thoughts and love, ballet dancers and reciting. All surcharged with such energy that it was almost hard to fall asleep in the evening. But we finally succeeded to get to bed at around midnight after an enormous quantity of food for dinner which we had at a restaurant on a recently renewed riva: a walking path along the sea coast. Wow, that was a long day. We miss you Abhinabha! Although we do have a little more space in the car now :)
