PINNACLES OF PEACE ON FERNIE'S SUMMITS
THE WORLD’S LONGEST TORCH RELAY RUN ACHIEVES NEW
PINNACLES OF PEACE
ON FERNIE’S SUMMITS
For immediate release: May 5, 2012
FERNIE, BC– The Canadian World Harmony Run Team hits the summit of the Canadian Rocky Mountains with their Olympic-style flaming torch today achieving a new height for world peace.
“It is a great honor to host the World Harmony (Ski) Run at Fernie Alpine Resort!” said Matt Mosteller VP Marketing Sales for Resorts of the Canadian Rockies (RCR), “Our community is thrilled to be part of this experience.”
The nine-member international teams is an unlikely band that includes a baker from Alberta,
a student from the North West Territories, a flutist and a harpist both from Slovakia, three Ukrainian chefs, an entrepreneur from Ottawa and a new Canadian immigrant out looking for a job – all volunteers taking time out to run for peace.
“I put a pound of love in every cake I make back home, and a pound of peace in every footstep I take on the road.” says Brahmata the 25-year-old Albertan baker.
They are joined by runners in over 100 countries around the world who run a flaming torch from town to town, city to city, country to country reminding us that we have a lot more that unites us than divides us.
“I have been running every Harmony Run since 1987” says Prapti, the Canadian team captain, “and I would not trade a single memory because out here, on the road, running with the torch, I only see people who want to make the world a better place – no matter where I am running in the world ”.
Founded in 1987 by peace visionary Sri Chinmoy, the bi-annual World Harmony Run is now the world’s longest global relay covering more than 45,000 miles. Celebrating its 25th Anniversary, runners have logged enough miles over the years to circle the earth more than thirteen times.
Over the coming months, the Canadian team will cover 2,700 kilometers, relay fashion, stopping in towns across the country. In parallel, Runs will take place throughout North and South America, Europe, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Asia.
Along the route, thousands of children will participate when the Run visits their schools, day camps and athletic associations. The message that “Harmony begins with me’’ has resonated with children of all ages and added to curriculums promoting cross-cultural understanding, self-esteem and positive learning environments.
The World Harmony Run is a non-profit event organized entirely by volunteers, which strives to encourage goodwill among peoples of all nations. To find out more

Fernie’s Mayor, Mary Giuliano will greet the team – 12 pm at City Hall. Come join the runners, relay the torch east to Sparwood and make a wish for peace. Show the world Fernie's unparalleled hospitality.
