On March 26th 2006 we held the World-Harmony-Run in Niterói – RJ – Brazil. After weeks of careful and loving preparation, we had on that day two groups. One was at the starting point, in front of the Contemporary Art Museum of Niterói, bearing both the flags of the World-Harmony-Run and that of our beloved country Brazil, and the firelit torch, symbol of hope and that harmony and happiness can be solid realities, which we can touch and feel in our lives if we but dare to cherish the flame of hope inside our hearts.

No dia 26 de março do 2006, em Niterói-RJ, tivemos a etapa brasileira da "World Harmony Run" - A Corrida da Harmonia Mundial. Após semanas de organização cuidadosa e amorosa, éramos naquele dia dois grupos: Um deles na largada, diante do Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói, com as bandeiras da Corrida da Harmonia Mundial e do Brasil - e a tocha acesa, símbolo de esperança e de que a harmonia e felicidade podem ser realidades sólidas, as quais podemos tocar e sentir em nossas vidas se ousarmos acalentar a chama da esperança em nossos corações.

Another group was standing at the finish point, smiles and cheers ready. Before the start, we met two of Niteróis runners, Cássio and Dr. Geraldo, among others, who didnt happen to know about what was going to take place. Still, something brought them to the starting point before the actual beginning – as they just had to be there. After a brief singing of the World-Harmony-Run theme song, we prepared for one minute in silence and then started at 9am, torch ablaze and smiles agaze.

Outro grupo estava na chegada, de palmas e sorrisos prontos. Antes da largada, nos encontramos com dois corredores de Niterói, Cássio e Dr. Geraldo, entre outros, que não sabiam do evento. Todavia, alguma força misteriosa os trouxe até o lugar da largada antes do início da corrida. Após um breve canto do tema da Corrida da Harmonia Mundial, nos preparamos durante um minuto de silêncio e então largamos às 9h, de tocha acesa e sorrisos estampados.

We ran down towards Icaraí beach, blessed all the time by heavy rain. Cheerfully we sang and shared torch and flags. From this remains crystal clear in my heart the picture of the flaming torch carried by loving runners, and the cheerful acclaim of the people going past us by car or on foot. Moreover, to be remembered are the smiles and the awakening that a flaming torch for harmony can bring to the hearts of all those who allow themselves to be touched by hope and goodwill.

Descemos a ladeira em direção à praia de Icaraí, agraciados com uma forte chuva, e num clima de boa vontade e harmonia cantamos e passamos de mão em mão a tocha e as bandeiras enquanto corríamos, ficando registrado no meu coração essa imagem da tocha acesa sendo portada por amáveis corredores e a alegre aclamação dos que passavam por nós de carro ou a pé. Ademais, lembro dos sorrisos e do despertar que uma tocha acesa por harmonia leva aos corações de todas as pessoas que se permitem ser movidos por esperança e boa vontade.

About midway to the finish point we were joined by two ladies, one from Norway and another from Canada. They were running on the opposite direction, but took a turn on their routes to join the sports procession of the World-Harmony-Run.

No caminho juntaram-se ainda duas senhoras, uma da Noruega e outra do Canadá, que corriam em sentido contrário e desviaram de suas rotas para tomar parte na procissão desportiva da World-Harmony-Run.

Close to the end of the beach, still more runners joined, including children. We then reached the stage. There was an explanation about the origins and goals of the World-Harmony-Run and its founder, Sri Chinmoy, an athlete, artist and spiritual teacher. Afterwards there was a speech by the Sports Undersecretary of Niterói, and our greatest joy: a chorus of children.

Chegando perto do final da praia, aos corredores se juntaram ainda mais pessoas, até que alcançamos o pequeno palco onde se narrou sobre as origens e objetivos da World-Harmony-Run e seu fundador, Sri Chinmoy, atleta, artista e professor espiritual. Logo após, tivemos um agradecimento por parte do Subsecretário de Esportes de Niterói, e a nossa maior alegria: um coral de crianças de Niterói, ensaiadas na canção tema da "World-Harmony-Run". 

They rehearsed the World-Harmony-Run theme song, and sang it both in Portuguese and English. They did it with so much sweetness and beauty, their soft voices alighting upon our ears like winged angels about to set foot on earth. In the end, we all sang together and the torch was passed hand-on-hand to all, runners, children and spectators.

Cantaram em inglês e português para todos os presentes com muita doçura e muita beleza, suas vozes suaves pousando em nossos ouvidos como anjos alados prestes a tocar os pés na Terra. Ao final cantamos todos juntos e levamos de mão em mão a tocha símbolo da Corrida a todos, corredores, espectadores e crianças.

Right before the farewell to our new friends, in an atmosphere of profound gratitude we shared tender words and phone numbers.

Logo antes da despedida dos nossos novos amigos, numa atmosfera de profunda gratidão trocamos telefones e palavras de carinho. 

At the last moment, reffering to the Run and the children, Mr. Cássio told me: “All this has touched me so much that I was barely able to withhold the tears.” At last, bearing inside our hearts an imperishable seed of goodness and harmony, each took to his way, running under mother nature´s compassion rain.

No último momento, se referindo à Corrida e às crianças, Cássio me contou: "Isso tudo me emocionou tanto que quase não contive as lágrimas." Por fim, carregando em nossos corações uma semente imperecível de paz e harmonia, nos espalhamos aos quatro cantos, correndo debaixo de uma chuva de compaixão da mãe natureza.

                    Transforma-se
                    Em semente de esperança.
