Australia 6 August: Townsville

Weir State School

This morning we visited Weir State School.

We spoke with the year 2 students, who were very happy to see us. The students had prepared a beautiful banner to greet us.

Afterwards we had a torch relay on the school oval – the children had made their own Harmony Torches to use!

The relay consisted of four teams, each comprising 7 students and one member of our Harmony Run team. There were some very fast runners, and much cheering from the sidelines.

Many thanks to Janice Jones, year 2 teacher (and mother of this writer!),

and school Principal, Jenny Vanderjagt.

– Rathin Boulton (Australia)

Radio Interview

Veeraja Uppal, one of the busiest organisers of the World Harmony Run, returned briefly to the team this morning – this time in the role of Queensland media co-ordinator. Veeraja led us straight to Radio 4K1G FM for an on-air interview with announcer Lloyd Wyldes.

Radio 4K1G FM is an Indigenous radio station, which broadcasts throughout northern Australia as far north as the Torres Strait Islands. As the World Harmony Run covers all cultures, Lloyd chatted to us about the universal theme of our event.

The station also asked us to record a station identification, in which we had some fun, leaving them with one of the more light-hearted IDs.

Townsville Civic Reception

The Townsville City Council hosted a wonderful ceremony for the running team this afternoon, including a generous afternoon tea.

The Mayor, Clr. Les Tyrrell, talked about the City’s multicultural program of “oneness in diversity”, which is apparent in the people we met throughout Townsville.

Though a city of some 250,000 people, it still has the friendliness and charm of a happy country town.

A World Harmony Run Torch-Bearer Award was presented to Barbara Pearson, co-ordinator of the Community Information Centre.

Along with her staff and cheerful team of volunteers, Barbara has worked tirelessly to keep Townsville and the wider community in touch with information relevant to all groups within our society.

As a finale, the team offered a stirring rendition of the World-Harmony-Run Song. We were accompanied by Brian Boulton, team member Rathin Boulton's father, a veteran local folk musician.

Rathin Boulton leaves the run today. He comes originally from Townsville and he made the most of his connections here by arraingng a visit to his mother's school this morning and having his father sing in the afternoon Civic Reception. His quiet and calm capacity to handle any situation was highly valued throughout his time on the run.

Also today from Townsville we sadly bid farewell to Prabuddha Nicol from Perth, who organised our program throughout the whole of Western Australia and ran with us for over a month. His torch repair skills and handy capacity to fix anything that needed attention, kept us rolling smoothly and efficiently through the hardest territories of the run. His constantly playful and happy cheerfulness will be missed by everyone.

Townsville South Primary School

In the afternoon we visited Townsville South Primary School’s After School Program. Dima Lehonkov from Ukraine, explained to the children what the World Harmony Run is about.

At the end we were offered cookies, sandwiches and drinks by the children who went to a lot of effort to pour our drinks and carry the food themselves on little trays. It was very nice and extremely cute.

Thank you Townsville South Primary for your hospitality.

Profile...

Misha is our heart. He looks after us as our team doctor, full of deep concern and caring, feeding us our medicines and censuring us for our less-than-healthy diet at times.

More than anyone else on the team, Misha glows.

When he finishes a run, often 7 or 10 kilometres at a time, he is so full of joy and light. His smile could practically cover the width of the whole of Australia. Although he is not perfectly fluent in English, being the Russian member of our team, his eyes and heart communicate more than words could say.

For deep spirituality and for true oneness, Misha is a treasure for this run around Australia. Rich for his smiles, his open heart, and his embracing attitude, we have the good fortune to share this journey with our Russian friend Misha.

– Prabhakar Street (Canada)
