Australia 9 June: Kimba – Streaky Bay

Team A

Today we ran from Kimba to Kyancutta. The day started off with cloudy skies and a chilly breeze.

Early on we bumped into a member from the Kimba Lions Club (who had kindly treated us to a prodigious feast the night before). He was out checking the farm with his dog, who was a bundle of life to say the least. This farmer was telling us about how the people of this area have been suffering severely from lack of water, so he was mighty glad to see the rain.

Our international team enjoyed the morning's run. Misha from Russia always moving with purpose;

Standa from Czech Republic with a glorious run in the rain;

and myself striding to the finish!

After a long day running we made it to Kyancutta, completing 89 km!

We then got to experience a beautiful sunset in Streaky Bay to top the day off beautifully...

– Shapathanal Daly (New Zealand)

Our team is happy to welcome our youngest member, 19-year-old Shapathanal from New Zealand to our crew as we gear up for the Nullarbor! (editor).

Team B

Today was a simple and joyful day of running and our team had 86 km to cover. Being a public holiday to celebrate the Queen’s Birthday, we had no ceremonies and could all relax and enjoy the view. Everyone was keen to hit the roads today and our star runner Nataliya from Ukraine covered 30 km very happily.

We met with Cooper and Molly the Maltese, along with their owners, Sarah and Uana, 2 young girls who were keen to photograph themselves and their pets with the Torch!

Sarah and Cooper then ran with the Torch half a km up towards where we spotted the van parked in the distance, and Sarah ran behind us carrying Molly whose little legs just couldn’t keep up with Cooper’s bounding enthusiasm to run!

It was lovely meeting you both Uana and Sarah and your adorable dogs gave us much joy. Thanks for joining with the World Harmony Run team!

After some very light rain gracing our cheeks, we stopped to stretch just as the sun peeked out from behind the clouds for the first time today. Glorious!

We all really appreciated the silence and stillness of running on these quiet roads.

Thank you to Kimba Caravan Park Motel who kindly gave our girls team a warm cabin room inside the motel instead of camping in our tents in the rain last night. To say we are most grateful would be an understatement.

– Kylie Williams (Australia)

Team C

Today saw us running on long stretches of road cutting through both barren landscape

and cultivated farmland closer to the coast.

Each runner would prepare for his daily mileage with some stretching or massaging before running on the open road. Our legs, sometimes a little achy from the day before, take time to loosen up over the first few kilometres.

Sandro (from Italy) was the first runner to endure the misty rain this morning as we covered the last section of our run to Streaky Bay. The rain fell diagonally under the influence of the wind giving each runner a soft soaking.

Prabhakar was next to run, jumping out into the rainy day without any hesitation. The road rose and fell with the surrounding land. Running to the crest of one stretch of road would reveal another expanse of road for a few kilometres.

The day slowly but surely brightened, first revealing patches of blue and then opening up to a bright sunny sky with fluffy clouds floating by.

The road beneath our feet dried and the landscape beamed after the revitalising rainfall. A refreshing wind came straight towards us, blowing inland having swept across the waves of the ocean.

Rising over a green hill of farmland the shimmering ocean was revealed to us.

The last 2 km rolled down towards the beautiful town of Streaky Bay. We reached our accommodation which was directly opposite a long jetty jutting out into the beautiful bay.

By then the sun was high in the sky but it was still a little gusty. It certainly wouldn't have been seen as warm enough for a swim but then again the Harmony Run team are not wont to pass up an opportunity...

What a splash! This is one way to recover after a day of running.

We would like to thank the Streaky Bay Hotel-Motel for providing us with accommodation in this idyllic location right across from the bay in this picturesque town.

- Colm Magee (Ireland)

It rained today on the parched red earth of Southern Australia; the hungry soil blessed by the soft moisture, soothing its harsh and dusty plains. Suddenly we find receding behind us the busy schedules of the cities, the people we have to meet and places we have to be each day; before us, the quiet vast. Width and length beckon us, an eye to eye reckoning to the true challenge of this run around a continent.

I ran today into this land of knobby trees and scrappy brush. Water dripping steadily from the brim of my cap, kilometres distance from anyone. Alone on this grey road, flanked by red earth drinking in the palpable freshness of the steady rain, stride by stride happily into whatever this journey may bring.

A lone kangaroo suddenly bounded gracefully across the road out in front of me, gliding smoothly into and through the trees and off into the distance of the surrounding plain. Leaving behind a deep thrill rippling through my being. The two of us out here together on this small patch of dusty earth, sharing the road with the rain and with friendship and with joy.

All I hear are my own footfalls, the flare of the torch mingled in the rain and the deep vastness all around, stretching me wider and farther until my own heart is touching the horizon in every direction .... treading on with a wide-open smile and deep deep gratitude-heart I place each foot and take each breath as a benediction before the beauty of this Australian country and the wonder of this entire world as I floated effortlessly along in perfect silent calm.
