Australia 7 May: Gosford – Sydney

Chris Garrett, a teacher from Gosford East Primary School, was responsible for making our visit to Gosford East Primary School so thrilling. Her enthusiasm and organisational skills were tremendous.

The ceremony was full with moving singing performances by the children and speeches from Mayor Jim McFaddyen and Federal Member of Parliament Belinda Neal.

Later, representatives from each year group were chosen to participate in a relay with the torch around the school oval. Gosford East is blessed with a superlative music teacher, Laura Spencer who led the children in a chant “we’re for the runners, we’re all for the runners”.

Thanks for a truly unique experience Gosford East and although I’m confident with the first verse of our national anthem 'Advance Australia Fair' I promise to learn the second verse before we visit your school on another occasion.

Our next stop – Berowra Public School!

Awesome performances by the children of “I’d like to teach the world to sing” and “Reach out and touch somebody’s hand” had a couple of the team members (who don’t wish to be named) in tears.

Teacher Helen Vincent was a true inspiration. Her love and kindness for the children was clearly reciprocated by the students.

The Team really enjoyed the “tim tam” biscuits shared with the school captains in the staff room after the ceremony. Life will only get brighter and brighter with children like these soon destined to be leading our precious planet.

Today we had the opportunity to see the various wonders of Sydney! Our first stop of course was Bondi Beach, then Centrepoint Tower and the iconic Sydney Opera House:

and the famed Sydney Opera House

I have to mention a very special run made famous by the Australians and especially trumpeted by the International co-ordinator of the World Harmony Run who himself is a true blooded Aussie, Salil Wilson. It is the Coogee-Bondi-Coogee run, starting on Coogee Beach and out and up over the cliffs along the sea to Bondi Beach and back for a 14 km beautiful run. I had been told of this run for years and I finally had the opportunity to experience it myself.

Our next stop was Centrepoint Tower in the centre of town. We went up and had a spectacular view of the city and enjoyed ourselves looking out over the skyline.

after we did a short run together through the mall

Then we rushed off to the Opera House to catch the last rays of the day as they spilled onto the grand roof of this distinctive landmark of Sydney and Australia.

Afterwards we only had to turn around to see the next site at sunset – the Sydney Harbour Bridge:

Today we had the sad task to say goodbye to our top organiser of all things pertaining to the run, he will be missed and we are looking forward to his return in Melbourne.

Take care Veeraja and we will see you soon, great job!
